Warm Spiced Apple Crumble

There’s a special kind of magic in a dessert that marries the comforting warmth of the oven with a cool, creamy accompaniment. This delightful apple crumble embodies that perfect contrast, making it an irresistible treat, especially on a crisp, cool day. The tender, cinnamon-spiced apples bubble invitingly beneath a golden, buttery oat topping. For the ultimate experience, a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a generous pour of double cream is simply essential.

Ingredients

  • For the Filling:
  • 6 medium baking apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • For the Topping:
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch or similar-sized baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, gently toss the sliced apples with the lemon juice, 1/4 cup of brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1 tablespoon of flour. Ensure the apples are evenly coated, then spread them in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the 1 1/2 cups of flour, rolled oats, 1 cup of brown sugar, and salt for the topping.
  4. Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry topping ingredients. Using your fingertips or a pastry cutter, rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs with some pea-sized lumps remaining.
  5. Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
  6. Apple crumble ready for the oven, with a thick layer of oat topping.

  7. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbling at the edges.
  8. Let the crumble rest for at least 15 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly. Serve warm, preferably with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of double cream.
